Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary
Private 4,500-hectare reserve near Manzini; game drive safaris, walking trails, birdwatching, horseback riding, cultural village visits.
Mlilwane is Eswatini's premier wildlife destination and one of Southern Africa's oldest private reserves (established 1972). It protects 4,500 hectares of grassland and acacia woodland. Animals include wildebeest, zebra, giraffe, warthog, and plenty of birds (380+ species). No big predators (lions, leopards) were removed to make it safe for walking safaris and horseback riding. Access is via game drives with lodge guides or self-drive 4x4. Walking trails (2-6 hours) penetrate deep into the reserve. Horseback safaris are unique and popular. A Swazi cultural village within the reserve offers demonstrations of traditional homestead life, crafts, and food preparation. Accommodation ranges from budget campsites (100-200 SZL/night) to mid-range lodges (400-800 SZL/night) to luxury safari camps (1,200+ SZL/night). Mlilwane is accessible from Manzini (30 km) or Mbabane (45 km); a day trip or 2-3 day immersion both work.
