Bulembu Border Area & Mountain Routes
Mountain border town, hiking trails into Drakensberg, rock art sites, rural Swazi culture, less touristed.
Bulembu is a small mountain town on the South Africa border in northwestern Eswatini. It is a starting point for hiking into the Drakensberg Mountains (shared with South Africa) and for exploring rural Swazi mountain culture. Rock art sites (San heritage) exist in the region but are less documented and touristed than South African sites. The landscape is wild and sparsely inhabited. Access to Bulembu requires mountain driving; a 4x4 is helpful. Accommodation is basic (guesthouses, camping). The town attracts few tourists, making it ideal for travelers seeking authentic rural encounters. Guides are available through local communities. Best season: September-May (cooler, wetter, green landscapes).
