Massawa
Historic Red Sea port with Ottoman-era coral-built architecture and islands, now being restored from war damage.
Massawa was historically a major trading port; Ottoman-era buildings feature coral-stone construction. The city was heavily damaged during the 1961-1991 war; reconstruction is ongoing. The harbor is picturesque with fishing boats and coastal views. Islands offshore can be visited by boat. The atmosphere is maritime and relaxed compared to Asmara. Tourism infrastructure is minimal; guides can be arranged locally. The city offers glimpses of Eritrean coastal culture and history.
