Keren

Northern highland town with a colorful market, strategic historical importance, and cooler mountain air.

Keren sits in the northern highlands and was strategically important during the war. The town has a large market with nomadic Beja traders selling livestock and goods. The surrounding highlands offer pleasant walks. Turkish and Italian architectural heritage remains. The atmosphere is small-town and highland, quite different from Asmara. Travel to Keren requires a travel permit; most tourists visit as a day trip from Asmara by hired car.
