Dahlak Islands

Pristine Red Sea islands with coral reefs, pearl diving history, and minimal tourism infrastructure.

The Dahlak Archipelago lies offshore from Massawa. The islands are largely uninhabited, with pristine reefs and marine life. Historical sites include medieval mosques and old pearl-diving infrastructure. Snorkeling and diving are exceptional but require hiring private boats. Tourism is virtually non-existent; the islands feel remote and pristine. Travel requires permits and advance arrangement with tour operators in Massawa or Asmara.
