Yamoussoukro & Basilique Notre-Dame de la Paix

The official capital built by ex-president Houphouet-Boigny, featuring a massive basilica (larger than St. Peter's by floor area) and grand architecture.

Yamoussoukro is an intentional capital: wide, tree-lined boulevards, government buildings, and the Basilique Notre-Dame de la Paix dominating the skyline. The basilica is architecturally grandiose and somewhat surreal; its size dwarfs the city. The Presidential Palace complex is nearby. The city feels quiet, planned, and somewhat melancholic compared to Abidjan's energy. It is worth a visit to understand post-colonial architecture and ambition, but does not hold tourist interest beyond a few hours.
