Lake Chad
Vast inland lake shrinking due to climate change, crucial to regional ecology and culture, with fishing villages and bird sanctuaries.
Lake Chad once covered 25,000 km2; it has shrunk to roughly 2,500 km2 due to drought and climate change. The lake is shallow, lined with papyrus swamps and fishing villages. Bird watching is excellent, especially at Guelendeng wetland. Tourism is minimal; access is via Baga Sola in the west. Boat trips reveal fishing communities and water ecology. The human and ecological crisis is visible but also the resilience of those living there.
