Central Kalahari Game Reserve

The Central Kalahari is one of Africa's largest game reserves, spanning 62,000 sq km of semi-arid savanna and grassland. Wildlife is dispersed and sparse compared to northern reserves: oryx, giraffe, wild dog, lion. The reserve is minimally developed and requires high self-sufficiency (carry fuel, water, food). Access is 4x4-only via rough tracks. Gates are at Maun (north) or Gaborone/Gweta (south). Park entry is 100 BWP/day; accommodation ranges from basic campsites (50-80 BWP/night) to mobile camps. San-led cultural experiences (Xade, Khimela camps) offer genuine bushcraft and trance ceremony exposure at mid-range prices (500-800 BWP/night). Landscape is meditative and sparse; suited to travelers seeking solitude and authentic cultural interaction. Best season: May-September (cooler, dry). December-April is very hot (40C+); less appealing except for dedicated trekkers.
