Timgad Roman Military Colony

Perfectly preserved Roman fortress-town in the Aures Mountains with grid street plan and theatrical ruins.

Founded by Emperor Trajan as a military garrison, Timgad 300 km southeast of Algiers showcases a complete Roman town layout. Streets form a perfect grid, with a forum, theater, baths, and workshops still visible. The Arch of Trajan marks the main entry. A UNESCO site and Algeria's most intact Roman ruin. The surrounding Aures landscape is dramatic; visit May-September for accessible roads.
