Kabylie Mountains and Traditional Villages

Verdant mountain region with Berber villages, cedar forests, and traditional crafts distinct from Arab north.

The Kabylie range northeast of Algiers is more forested and green than the rest of Algeria, with a distinct Berber cultural identity. Villages perch on hillsides; traditional dress and crafts are visible. Tizi Ouzou and Bouira are main towns. Hiking trails wind through cedar and oak forests. Markets sell Berber carpets, pottery, and honey. Yennayer (Amazigh New Year) in January is a lively cultural celebration. Access is straightforward; safer than southern regions.
