Tassili n'Ajjer Plateau
UNESCO prehistoric rock art site with Neolithic and early Egyptian paintings atop a vast sandstone plateau.
This vast plateau in southeastern Algeria (near the Libya border) contains thousands of rock paintings dating 6000-1500 BCE, depicting herds, hunters, and domestic scenes. The landscape itself is surreal: towering rock formations, sand seas, and natural arches. Access is challenging and generally requires 4WD and a guide; organized tours depart from Djanet. Security situation should be checked before planning; borders are sensitive.
