Ghardaia and the M'zab Valley

UNESCO valley town with fortified kasbahs, traditional architecture, and vibrant markets in the heart of the Sahara.

Five fortified towns (pentapolis) set in a valley 600 km south of Algiers. Ghardaia is the largest, with narrow streets, traditional white-washed mud-brick houses, and a lively souk. The architecture and urban planning reflect medieval Islamic design. Conservative Islamic culture is observed; dress and behavior should be respectful. The landscape transitions from scrub to true Sahara. Best visited October-April.
