Ahaggar Mountains and Tamanrasset
Dramatic volcanic rock formations and Tuareg nomadic culture in deep Sahara; challenging but rewarding remote travel.
The Ahaggar (Hoggar) massif in far southern Algeria is a mountain range rising abruptly from sand, with peaks over 2,900 meters. Tamanrasset is the gateway; from there, treks and 4WD expeditions explore the rocks, canyons, and nomadic camps. The Tuareg people, with their distinctive indigo clothing and nomadic heritage, are encountered here. Access is restricted; security situation varies and should be verified. A serious desert adventure requiring preparation and advance organization.
